The young dogs are very sensitive to partial or complete paralysis of the rear legs. This can de caused by rough play with their littermates when they fall on their backs or bump into sharp objects. Sometimes puppy strangles occurs without any apparent reason. According to some, the largest puppies have a higher risk of getting the disease because they are rougher and more cumbersome when playing, living and learning. Treatment is similar to people with acute spinal disorders. If no improvement shows within ten days the puppy’s prognosis is regrettably not good. But if the puppy shows sign of recovery, he can recoup freedom of movement for about 75 to 100%. In the book "The Magnificent Irish Wolfhound ", written by Mary McBryde, you can read more about this subject.
