    Cancer/Tumors

When talking about Irish Wolfhounds the subject of bone cancer seems to dominate conversation more and more. Most times it concerns a growth on one of the forelimbs of the dog. Often this disorder occurs during the fifth and sixth year of his life. This usually means the end of the dogs’ life, because often, when diagnosed, the cancer has already developed in a too far stage.

Unfortunately there is hardly any research being done in the Netherlands, and we don’t know for sure whether hereditary components are relevant. We have observed that bone cancer tends to appear more regular within certain families

In England and the United States intensive research is being conducted. Mrs. G. Griffin, Irish Wolfhounds breeder herself and connected to the University of Bristol, has started an investigation about bone cancer after having lost several hounds to this disease.
